How Ayurvedic Medicine Programs Promote Good Health

By Richard Morgan

When it comes to alternative and holistic practices, there are a number of options. One of the oldest, Ayurvedic Medicine Programs promotes overall health and well being through a number of practices and treatments. The primary goal of the practice which dates back 3,000 years is to maintain balance of mind, body and spirit.

While the practice can aid in healing, the purpose is to promote and maintain good health. Whereas, when an individual is out of balance, there are specific treatments in the tradition which can be provided to promote healing. As such, in the United States has designated the practice as complementary and alternative healing.

Individuals working in this area often believe all things in the Universe are connected. The theory of connectedness and the belief that each and every mind, body and spirit remaining in balance will promote good health are the primary principles of the practice. Whereas, if there is a break in such balance, then an individual can often become anxious, depressed or experience a minor or major illness.

Practitioners believe that each and every individual is made up of five basic elements which exist in the Universe. The elements which are also natural resources include earth, air, fire, water and space. For, in the Ayurvedic tradition, these are believed to form in the body to create energies known as doshas.

Individuals practicing the tradition believe that doshas also control how the body works. As part of the belief, each dosha is provided a designation based on connections to different areas of the body. As such, there is a strong consensus that the principles and practices associated with the practice have been well proved over the last 3,000 years.

In the Ayurvedic tradition, air, earth, fire space and water are inherit in all individuals. As such, when in balance with the universe and natural resources, individuals practicing the tradition often also have a stronger connection to nature. For, the elements create energies known as doshas which are believed to balance body, mind and spirit, thus promoting better overall health and well being.

When it comes to the dosha's, each has a particular relation to the elements. For example, Pitta Dosha consist of water and fire, Vata Dosha of air and space and the Kapha Dosha consisting of earth and water. As such, when in tune with these doshas or energy centers, individuals have the ability to stay balanced on a daily basis.

Ultimately, each individual is a practitioner when it comes to promoting good health. In doing so, there is a diet associated with the tradition. For, one thing that is clear in the practice is that all good health begins with proper digestion and metabolism of food. As a result, since food is considered as powerful as medicine, eating wisely on a daily basis is the best thing individuals can do to promote better overall health and well-being.
