A bariatric surgery is one type of surgical operation that are often done on people who have obesity. The adjustable gastric band and the sleeve gastrectomy are two of the most common types of surgeries for weight loss. According to a research, these two procedures causes loss of weight in long term, recovery for diabetes, improvement of the factors in cardiovascular risks, and as well as to reduce mortality.

These two surgical methods can be only recommended for a person with obesity and those who have a 40 BMI or the body mass index. These methods are also for people with obesity having a 30 BMI or having some major medical conditions like having diabetes. And this would literally mean that people having a 30 or more of BMI become candidates for the gastric banding and sleeve gastrectomy surgical operations.

The adjustable gastric band is often called as the lap band. This is procedure where in there is a silicone device placed around the stomach, on its top portion in order to treat obesity. The main purpose of doing this is for slowing the consumption of food, and as a result, the amount of food that is consumed will be reduced.

An individual may achieve and sustain his or her weight loss. It is done by selecting the right healthy food options, food limit intake, reduce appetite, and also by the food progress from the top to he bottom portion of stomach digestion. However, this may only be applied for people who have tried proper diet and proper exercise before the surgery.

According to some researches, this kind of surgery may not be a very easy option for people suffering from obesity. This is because it is a step which is very drastic and it also involves severe pain and risks just like any other types of surgical operations. However, it is less invasive and the person may only stay in the hospital for a short period of time after the operation. And other advantages of this is having smaller scars, faster recovery, and lesser pain compared to other procedures.

One last advantage is it does not involve staples and removing some parts of the stomach and also, the intestines are not moved. And since the materials used are biocompatible, it can remain in the body without casing any harm. However, not all obese patients are candidates to this. Those who are extremely obese and who already have undergone abdominal surgeries may be required to have open approach.

The sleeve gastrectomy is the other kind of surgical procedure where in weight loss is performed through removing large stomach parts near the curvature area. By this, the stomach size will be reduced for about 15 percent of normal size. And thus, resulting to a sleeve or tube like form.

The procedure is one option which is becoming very common to most people in New York. This involves the removal of stomach parts from antrum to fundus close to cardia. About 6 centimeters is being removed longitudinally. Approximately, 150 milliliters is the size of remaining stomach.

This type of surgery can also be applied to both adolescents and children. According to some studies, it causes a large amount of weight loss to them when they reach the age of 5 to 21 years old. This surgery also causes complications like blood clots and infections, esophageal pain, vomiting, sleeve leaking, and many more.
