Substance abuse has ripped off the community young men and women who had a lot of potential in their life. Doing this will help save the future generation and ensure that moral decadence has been eliminated from the community. There are many ways in which we can combat this vice.

Individual counseling is one of the way therapists and counselors use to deal with substance abuse. It not only deals with combating illegal drug use but also deals with other factors that will help improve the life of the abuser after therapy is complete. These factors include employment status, quitting illegal doings, and rebuilding family relationships. The abuser is counseled and taught ways to ensure that he or she maintains restraint. The therapist has a twelve step program, the addict should make regular visits to the center and the therapist can make necessary recommendations.

Group counseling is one more way of treatment. It is mainly used to develop social skills among the addicts. They share their problems and experiences among themselves in the presence of a therapist. It improves the social life of the addict and their discussions help to inspire a healthy lifestyle. The therapist then guides them on the proper ways to handle their addictions and assign each member with a sober companion to mentor them. An example of group counseling is alcoholics anonymous.

Another method that is commonly used is called the outpatient treatment. It is an effective method that is less costly. It is suitable for people who have busy schedules on their program. It also works for those whose level of abuse is not as dire. It is mostly voluntary for people who have want to quit a bad habit like smoking. Depending on the dedication a patient gives to the cause, it can be very effective. There also programs of this kind that deal with mental disorders as well.

Short-term residential programs are used for people who are available at a short notice. They take three to six weeks depending on the condition of the client. This program was designed to treat alcoholics but was later embraced for other substance abused when the number of addicts increased significantly. It is a hospital-based program that requires regular check-ups for the addict.

Long-term residential treatment is a non-hospital program that provides twenty-four hours a day care. It generally takes a period of six to twelve months and it focuses on the resocialization of the abuser. It focuses on developing responsibility and social life of an abuser. It helps one get rid of the bad behavior and replace them with harmonious ways to interact with each other.

Arresting illegal drug users and placing them in a cell is also a way used to curb hard narcotics. Once in jail the users are treated under pressure and shown ways to earn a living away from drugs. Once released the probability of relapse is low due to the fear of authority.

There is also medication for addictions such as heroin addiction, one is given methadone to help deal with the craving and withdrawal. This method is combined with constant behavioral therapies to curb substance misuse. Alcohol, opioids, cocaine among others are drugs that medication is recommended for.
